Theme for 2003: Peace with God, peace with self and peace with others.
Key Verse for 2003: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God
(Matthew 5:9).
Prayer for the Year: Lord make me an instrument of your peace."For the wound
of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded, I mourn and dismay has taken hold on me.
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the
daughter of my poor people not been restored?" Jeremiah 8:21-22
Lent is the season to acknowledge the wounds in our hearts and apply the balm of Gilead
for healing. What types of wounds are there in our hearts? The wounds of physical illness,
the wounds of pain and agony, the wounds of helplessness and brokenness, the wounds of
failure and dissatisfaction, and the wounds of anger and anxiety? Sometimes we may have
more. The balm of Gilead is the balm of healing that flows out from the heart of God as
revealed on the cross, the balm of unselfish and self-giving love, the balm of caring and
saving love. During this years lent, for the next fifty days, we need to identify our own
wounds and brokenness, and bring them to the foot of the cross and baptize them with the
unfailing love of God.
But if the wounds of our neighbors are still bleeding, how can our wounds be healed.
Others are indispensable in my own healing process. Here comes the need of reconciliation.
In the eastern churches, lent begins with the experience of "Shubkono", which is
the celebration of reconciliation. Let us celebrate Shubkono throughout the lent season
and throughout the year, as a means of bringing reconciliation between us, and between God
and us.
Wounded but healed, estranged but reconciled, broken but remolded. Here I am God, heal
me wholly and keep me holy, now and forever. |
