Theme for 2003: Peace with God, peace with self and peace with others.
Key Verse for 2003: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God
(Matthew 5:9).
Prayer for the Year: Lord make me an instrument of your peace.Conversion
of a Businesswoman
Lydia was the first Christian convert from Europe. Her story is described in Acts 16.
Paul was visiting Philippi during his second missionary journey. He met her at a riverbank
on a Sabbath day. She was a businesswoman from Thyatira town and she sold purple clothes
to the people in Philippi. Paul shared the word of God with Lydia and the small group of
women who gathered there. Lydia listened and God opened her heart. A good listener not
only allows the word of God to let in but also invites the Lord of the word to get in.
Through listening, she opened her life to the words she never heard before and in turn
allowed Jesus to create more space within her, to the word and to the Master. It was like
a heart transplant surgery and Jesus did that very well. Jesus, through that heart surgery
opened up not only the heart of Lydia but also the heart of Europe. Lydia gives hope to
all the women in all the generations about their worth and virtue before God and the
world. If her commitment could transform a continent, then the commitment of the
todays women can transform the whole world. Womens commitment is crucial in
the transformation of the world. As we celebrate Sevika Sangam Day during this month, let
us be open to Lydias challenges to listen to the word of God and to allow Jesus to
open up our hearts for Him and Him alone. The listening heart of that businesswoman became
a missionary heart. Let Lydia be a challenge to all of us, especially to the women in our
church and community to move towards a meaningful missionary existence in this world. |
