Theme For The Year 2004: FELLOWSHIP
Key Verse For the Year : "But if we walk in the light ... we
have fellowship with one another" (I John1:7)
Divided Heart
“Teach me your way, O Lord; I will walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your
name.” Psalm 86:11
Prophet Hosea used three colorful figures of speech to describe the divided hearts of the people of Israel (Hosea 7:8-12). First, they were like a half-baked cake - useful neither to God nor to pagans. Second, they were like a proud man who can’t see the signs of his aging – they were unaware of their spiritual decline. Third, they were like a senseless dove – flying from one pagan nation to another in a vain quest for help. Today, we Christians also show these symptoms in our practical life.
We believe in Jesus but are not fully committed to him. We are sometimes like the half-baked cake – neither fully committed to God nor to our fellow beings. We go to church but don’t want to live out our faith each day if it deprives us of worldly success or pleasure. Our commitment and our priorities are half-baked and we become less used instead of being useless. We are sometimes like the proud man and do not realize our own spiritual or moral decline, but are very critical of the decline of others. We often judge others in order to defend us from changing or growing. We are sometimes like the senseless dove and go from this place to that place in order to get peace and prosperity. We sometimes wander from one church to another, from one charismatic leader to another, from one healer to another, and are seldom willing to sit back and look at ourselves.
Are we divided in our hearts, in our loyalty to the Lord and in our commitment to our calling? Let us pray for unity in our heart and unity in our loyalty to our Lord.
Prayer: Lord, create in me a clean heart, a united heart and a compassionate heart. |
