Theme For The Year 2005: Fellowship with God, self and others.
“His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your
faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23.
Although suffering sickness and setbacks throughout his life, Thomas Chisholm (1866-1960), wrote the hymn “Great is Thy faithfulness,” inspired by the hope revealed in the book of Lamentations. This book echoes one of the saddest stories in the history of Israelites: the Babylonian exile in BC 586 and the subsequent destruction of Solomon’s temple. Israelites lost their center of worship and the heart of their community. The people were left with no food, no rest, no peace and no leader. But in the midst of suffering and grief, prophet Jeremiah found a reason for hope. He wrote, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness.”
Jeremiah’s hope came from his personal experience of the Lord’s faithfulness and from his knowledge of God’s promises in the past. Without these, he would have been unable to comfort his people. These verses and the hymn assures us that even in time of great fear, tragic loss, and intense suffering, we can find comfort and confidence as we trust in God’s great faithfulness. Since God’s compassion ends not, there is always space and possibility for hope, restoration and renewal. Let’s hold on to this hope and continue experiencing the unfailing faithfulness of God.
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassion they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
THE BEST REASON FOR HOPE IS GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.
