Jesus said, "Fill the jars with water." And they
filled them up to the brim. John 2:7
Lent is celebration of the life that God has given us. As we prepare
for this year's lent, let me share with you the story of a conversation
between a businessman and a fisherman.
A businessman
visited a costal village and came across a fisherman who was pulling his
boat up to the shore. He appreciated the fisherman for the good catch and
asked him how long it took to catch that much fish. He replied that it
took more than half a day. The businessman asked him, "Why not you
stay out longer and catch more fish?" He replied, "I have enough
to support my family's needs." Then came the next question, "But
what do you do with the rest of the time?" The fisherman replied,
"I spend some time with my family, then I will visit some of my
friends and help some poor families, after that I will buy groceries for
the next day and reach home without delay. We pray together and sleep
well, get up in the morning and attend the mass, then go for work."
The
businessman scoffed, "I am a Harvard graduate and could help you
build up a good business. You should spend more time fishing and with the
proceeds should buy a big boat. Then you should buy a bigger boat and
later many boats and eventually own a fleet of boats. Then you should
directly deal with the processor, eventually you should open a fish
processing factory and control the product, processing and distribution.
Then you should leave this village and move to a bigger city, own a
mansion and live with pomp and splendor." The fisherman asked,
"Then what?" The businessman replied, "Then you should
retire and lead a peaceful life, with your family and friends." The
fisherman replied, "Exactly that is what I am doing now. I am
celebrating my life."
Let us
celebrate our life by filling it to the brim with love of God and by
sharing it with others. Prayer: "Lord, fill me with your love and
help me celebrate the life that you have given me!" |

What is Prayer?
-Dr. Thampi P. Daniel
Matt. 7: 7-11
It is talking with God.
It is making request known unto Him in faith.
The above scripture is so simple on the surface, that we are in danger of
failing to recognize its immensity. Our Lord instructs the believer to ask, seek
and knock, because these words cover the whole spectrum of prayer.
Prayer is asking and receiving.
When you know the will of God regarding a need, whether it is material or
spiritual, you can ask and receive. This is prayer according to the revealed
will of God (1 John 5: 14-15).
Prayer is seeking and finding.
When you do not know the will of God regarding a need, whether it is
material or spiritual, then you are to seek His will in prayer concerning this
need until you find it. This is prayer for knowledge of the unrevealed will of
God in a specific need. (Col. 3:1, also Jer. 29:12, 13 OT).
Prayer is knocking and opening.
When you know the will of God, and yet you find a closed door, you are to knock,
and keep on knocking until God opens the door. This is tenacious prayer for
mountain-moving faith. Knocking prayer perseveres until impossible becomes the
possible. This is miracle working prayer. (Matt.17:14-21).
All things are possible when you ask, seek, and knock.
