CHRISTMAS REFLECTION

God so loved the world that he gave his only son… (John 3:16)

Once again we are in the advent season. The advent of God in human terms and form in the world is the mark of God's love and solidarity with us. God became human so that we may become human.
Today when we celebrate this grate event, our priority is for jubilation and festivity. Now Christmas is imprisoned with Carols, cards, cakes and costumes and thus its message is not communicated. Here Christmas is imprisoned in commercial motives.

1) Christmas-Celebration of God's love for us.
The Christmas is a celebration of God's love for us. God so loved the world that he sent us His only begotten son. It is made richer by the fact that God who made man was prepared to lay down His life for us. No greater love has any man than the love, which prompts him to lay down his life for his friends. The characteristics of Christian love are: to dedicate ourselves to others, our Lord lived that kind of love to the utmost limit.

2) Christmas -The most sublime example of sharing
God is the one who has shown us the greatest and most sublime example of sharing. He shared His very being with us. Those who share their resources with those in need understand the meaning of Christmas better. The story of a poor family in Germany in 17th Century illustrates this point.

The head of the family, Mr. Muller, has been with out a job for quite some time. The mother has been bedridden. The two children-Hans (10 years) and Gretchen (8years) were sad that they could not celebrate Christmas. Gretchen said to Hans that they should write a letter to God about their predicament. So Gretchen scribbled a letter and wrapped in a paper and wrote the address thus: Father in Heaven; post office -'Heaven'. She dropped the letter in a post box near their house. The postman saw this strange letter when he opened the mailbox. He read the letter and pushed it under the door of municipal chairman. The rough and insensitive chairman read it and threw it away. But he could not sleep peacefully that night. Finally, he got up and called his staff and ordered them to take lots of food, meat and all goodies to the house of Muller. Hans and Gretchen and their parents were surprised to see the horse cart stop at their door and workers unload all those good things. Oh, what a Christmas gift it was!

Wishing you all a meaningful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, beyond its festivity!

SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT

St. Matthew: 12: 31

Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

This is a solemn study, because the Holy Spirit is God and can be sinned against by both the believer and unbeliever. May He help you search your heart as you consider?

1) The sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit (above verses 31, 32). This sin is committed by unbelievers. It is often called the "unpardonable sin". It has no forgiveness. It was committed by the enemies of Jesus when they accused Him of casting out of devils by the power of Satan (Matt 12:24) when Jesus claimed to cast them out by the "Spirit of God" (Matt 12:28)

2) The sin of resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts.7:51). This sin is committed by the unbeliever when rejecting Jesus Christ as Savior and the Lord.

3) The sin of grieving the Holy Spirit (Eph: 4:30-32). This sin is committed by believers. He is grieved by us unless He controls our lives to the glory of Jesus Christ.

4) The sin of quenching the Holy (1 Thess. 5:19). This sin is committed by Christians when known sin is allowed to go un-confessed (1 John1:9, also Is:59: 1,2).

5) The sin of lying to the Holy Spirit (Acts: 5:1-11). The sin of Ananias and Sapphira was deception, born in jealousy. They tried to mock God (Gal. 6:7). The Holy Spirit can be sinned against, because, He is God.

Next month: THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

-Dr. Thampi P. Daniel.
