CONVERSION OF A BUSINESSWOMAN (Acts 16:11-15)

Lydia
was the first Christian convert from Europe. Her story is described in Acts16: 11-15. Paul was visiting Philippi during his second missionary journey. He met her on a riverbank on a Sabbath day. She was a businesswoman from Thyatira town and she sold purple clothes to the people in Philippi.

Paul shared the word of God with Lydia and the small group of women who gathered there. Lydia listened and God opened her heart. A Good listener not only allows the word of God to let in but also invites the Lord of the word to get in. Through listening, she opened her lives to the words she never heard before and in turn allowed Jesus to create more space within her. It was like a heart transplant surgery and Jesus did that very well. Jesus, through that heart surgery opened up not only the heart of Lydia but also the heart of Europe.

Lydia gives hope to all the women in all the generations about their worth and virtue before God and the world. If her commitment could transform a continent, then the commitment of today's women can transform the whole world. Women's commitment is crucial in the transformation of the world.

As we celebrate Mother's Day during this month, let us honor the women in our lives who share their wisdom, show us kindness, and who seek above all to honor the Lord and His word.

The listening heart of that businesswoman became a missionary heart. Let Lydia be a challenge to all of us, especially to women in our church and community to move towards a meaningful missionary existence in this world.

God bless my mother… all I am I owe to her (Abraham Lincoln)

THE HALL OF FAITH
 Hebrew 11: 32-35

This chapter is often called the "Hall of Faith". You need to come here often and linger long, that your faith may become strong in the Lord, for in this Scripture we get a view of the history of Israel and the Church, as it is written by faith, in the blood of the saints.

The worshiped by faith as Abel. They walked by faith as Enoch. They worked by faith as Noah. The lived by faith as Abraham. They governed by faith as Moses. They followed by faith as Israel. The fought by faith as Joshua. They conquered by faith as Gideon. They subdued kingdoms by faith as David. They closed the mouths of lions by faith as Daniel. They walked through the fire by faith as the Three Hebrew Children. They suffered by faith as Paul. They died by faith as Stephen, the first Christian martyr (Acts. 7:54-60).

By faith they were patient in suffering, courageous in battle, made strong out of weakness, and were victorious in defeat. They were more than conquerors by faith. It is only by faith in the all-powerful Christ that you can be superior to circumstances and victorious over all the evil forces that would destroy you.

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Heb. 12:2). The faith of the saints inspires us, but we look to Jesus as our example of faith.

Next month: "The EXISTENCE OF GOD"
-Dr. Thampi P. Daniel
