Greetings to all the members of the Atlanta Mar Thoma Church. We are again publishing the parish news letter after a few years of gap. I hope this news letter will keep the members informed of the different activities of the parish and enable all of us to actively participate in the life and ministry of the parish.

Once the disciples of Jesus were travelling across the sea of Galilee in a boat. Jesus was not with them at that time. It was dark, and suddenly, the sea became rough. There was strong wind and high tide. The disciples became helpless and were in panic. Then came Jesus walking over the water, and they were terrified. Jesus only walked over the water, but also walked over the fear and insecurity of the disciples. The miracle of Jesus walking over the hurdles of life is more important than the miracle of him walking over the water.

Our Life will become a miracle if we allow Jesus to walk over the waters of fear and insecurity

We live in a world of fear and terror. After 911, the Americans and the whole world are living in more fear than ever before. The winds of terror and the tides of fear are so strong and high that our boat of faith has considerably deteriorated and has become feeble and powerless. Here comes Jesus who can walk over the hurdles and help the boat reach the shore. Our life will become a miracle if we allow Jesus to walk over the waters of fear and insecurity. Let us invite Jesus for a walk. Let us go to the other shore with him. May god bless everybody.

In His Service,
Rev. Simon Behanan

Learning From Leaders

"To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing."

Recently, I happened to read an article which had a definition of a leader. A leader is a person who is expected to take charge of a situation, and he/she is immune to criticism. Leaders are regular targets of criticism but they are tough to hit because they move faster than the speed of the stones of the critics thrown at them.

They say nothing, do nothing philosophy might help some to climb to the top of ladder. However, it does not create leaders who have passion and determination for excellence to achieve goals. Real leaders are of course wrong sometimes and the criticism they receive may be just. However, is the criticism delivered in a helpful manner?

Instead of being helpful, our motive is destruction. Real leaders are willing to live the pain of criticism and move forware. Real leaders risk painful failure rather than taking the easy way out.

When we criticise, we must be willing to attest it with our signature. Real leaders lead others beyond their line of formal authority! In many areas of growth in our church, the members need to play an active role - we cannot think that it is the job of the other one.

What burdens me the most is the hypocritical vies of some of our compatriots. Their goal in life is to be politically right. They want to look good in front of others. They are willing to criticize everyone behind the curtain, but are not willing to express the same opinion in front of others because they have selfish motives.

Every time somebody criticize us, we should not take the position "to avoid cirticism, say nothing, do nothing and be nothing." After all, we are responsible Mar Thoma Church citizens. To progress, we mush express our opinion, but learn how to present our ideas without getting emotional. - T.O.

The deadline for submission of articles for publication in the july Atlanta Mar Thoma Church News is June 20th.
